Stress & Hair Loss: Can They Be Related?

Thanks to the modern times we are living in, stress has become a part of our day-to-day life. Stress doesn’t come alone as it brings along anger, anxieties, worries and even depression with it. All of this adds up and eventually leads to hair loss. The medical term for stress induced hair loss is Telogen Effluvium. So stress does share a relationship with hair loss, which in turn occurs due to many other factors contribute to stress, but with the correct steps taken it can be overcome, eventually stopping the hair loss.

Most people never get the association of hair loss with stress because usually, the hair loss doesn’t start to occur until the particular stressful event ends. It is said that the sudden upcoming of a stressful event starts to cause the hair follicles to relapse into a resting stage prematurely, in the process stopping hair production. During the time the hair follicles are in this resting phase (which is usually several months), an unusual quantity of hair will be lost. However, mostly, hair loss which occurs due to stress is very much temporary & heals right after the hair follicles resume the production of new hair. There are also times when stress isn’t directly responsible for hair loss but indirectly contributes to the development of certain personal habits that give rise to hair loss.

Dealing with bad habits, which develop directly due to stress, will minimize hair loss to a high degree. Usually, when people are over-stressed and are going through mental pressure, they tend to ignore their eating habits. It’s very obvious that a person having an unbalanced diet will have a negative affect on his hair, ultimately leading to hair loss. Someone having a poor diet will start to lose about 200-300 hairs per day, more than his body can cover up for, causing hair loss. The second most common pair of wrong habits that aggravate with stress are drinking and smoking. When an individual is under stress, he starts to look for means of coping with it. Cigarettes and alcohol act as relaxants when one is going through a stressful situation and are usually readily available, legally. Even when taken moderately, both these vices carry health risks. These habits become worse as in times of stress, people increase their intake as a means to cope with the situation. So, instead of depending on harmful elements such as alcohol and cigarettes, one should try to overcome stress with positive exercises and habits.

There are a number of techniques to bust stress, however, finding one, which is working for you is important. Beating stress not only helps you grow healthy hair but also affects your overall health positively. You can try out effective methods like deep breathing, meditation, yoga and creative visualization to successfully lower your stress levels. Taking simple measures and putting in a little effort in cultivating productive habits can help you with your stress related hair loss problems easily.

Stress is the major factor responsible for hair loss in many people, but most of them aren’t aware of it. Awareness is the key here. It’s important to understand the relationship between hair loss and stress and as well as get rid of any personal habits aren’t helping and replace them with application of positive techniques to halt hair loss and grow new, healthy hair. Thus, by delving deep into the actual cause of your hair loss, you can gradually come up with the right solution.
