Finding a hairdresser who not only listens but understands you seem like an impossible dream. But it isn’t. Be prepared to spend some time and effort looking for someone you can trust. The best way to start is to book a consultation at a salon. This doesn’t have to be on the day of your appointment and should be without obligation, so if you don’t like their suggestions go elsewhere and if a salon tells you they don’t offer free consultations walk away! Never feel obliged to keep going back to the same stylist if you don’t like the way they do your hair, chopping and changing is the only way you’ll find someone who really understands it. And when you do find that star stylist, hang onto them. Make sure that you visit someone with whom you feel totally comfortable. You must feel at ease and confident enough to voice your opinions (you have to speak up as it’s no good waiting until the damage is done). Avoid this by choosing low maintenance styles, which will also put less stress on this delicate hair type.
• Thick, frizzy, curly – Avoid extreme layering you need to maintain the weight to keep it down. That said, you could try gradual layers around the hair line and at the bottom of the hair which work to take the bulk from the hair and make it more manageable. Try and work with your hair’s natural texture, making it a feature rather than something you’re trying to disguise. This way you cut down styling time and maintain the condition of your hair.
• Normal and straight – This is the easiest hair type to manage so choose any style you fancy. If you’re after versatility, don’t forget to leave some layers long so you can chop and change your style, create curls, waves or dress your hair.
